New School Dandy Profile: Kwannam Chu

Over the past several months we have been introduced to many amazing people through our Facebook fan page. With this post we continue a regular series of profiles of New School Dandies. This week we feature photographer Kwannam Chu of We Could Grow Up Together.

Where did you grow up? Hong Kong.

Where do you live now? Hong Kong and New York City!

What’s your occupation? Creative Director. Photographer. I also write for magazines in China.

When did you establish your personal style? Was there a pivotal moment? How has it changed? I do not think there was a moment. My style keeps evolving; it depends on what inspires me or turns me on recently.

How would you describe your style? If you put a prepster, an East Village hipster, a little Sebastian Flyte, an asian Pee Wee Herman into a blender, the smoothie would be called Kwannam Chu.

What are your sources of inspiration? Stylish charismatic real folks on the street, antique photos, magazine spreads (old or new), fictional or fairy tales characters, Norman Rockwell's works ...

Who is your style icon? Sebastian Flyte from Brideshead Revisited, Ashely Olsen, Gene Kelly, Stephen Tennant, Antony Baekeland in the movie Savage Grace.

What are your preferred dandy reading materials? Dressing Right: A Guide for men by Charles Hix. Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh. The New Yorker. Serious Pleasures: The Life of Stephen Tennant by Philip Hoare. The magazine Man About Town.

What is your favorite personal item (non-clothing/accessories)? My journal and my filofax agenda.

What is your favorite clothing article or accessory? My DITA spectacles.

Where is your favorite or dream vacation spot? New York in the 50's.

At which establishments would you consider yourself a regular? I need my coffee from Abraco and Nine Street Espresso. Food shopping at the Wholefoods on Bowery. Always keep going back for the squid pasta at Max. The cakes from Babycakes are always my guilty pleasure. Mama's Food Shop is my favorite dinner!

What would you be doing ten years from now? Doing the same thing, expect I would be a hell lot better and skillful and amazing at that.
