Genuine Dandy Clothier: Harris Tweed

Since the mid-1800's the legendary Harris Tweed label has been associated with fine gentlemen's clothing. However, up until recently, the Scottish company only provided the material used by other clothiers. That has all changed with the debut of Harris Tweed's own line of Jackets. Currently only offering one design in four different fabrics, the jackets retail on the company's web site at $500. For a more affordable Harris Tweed option, check out our Christy's walker hat, also made of genuine Harris Tweed. (Via men.style.com.)

Dandies Online: The Tweed Run

Via the blogs A Continuous Lean, Lark About, and Hollister Hovey I found these amazing photos from the Tweed Run in London, a bike ride/social event for the dapper members of the London Fixed-Gear And Single-Speed Winter Dress Club. Per the invitation, the suggested attire was: "woolen plus fours, harris tweed jackets, flat caps, fair isle jumpers, alpaca coats, merino wool team jerseys, cycling skirts, cravats or ties, and of course a hip flask of brandy."

Awards were presented for "most dapper chap, best moustache, most enviable period bicycle, and the doff of the cap award for most civilised behaviour on the day." How did I miss the event?

Dandies On The Runway: Thom Browne

Thom Browne's "runway show" at Pitti Immagine Uomo last week was less runway and more dandy performance art. Essentially Browne staged an office-like play in which the models went to "work" typing at 50's-era type writers at individual desks set in school-like rows. The models, all dressed identically, were dressed in camel coats, gray flannel suits, gray cashmere cardigans, with black leather brief cases, glasses, and slicked hair. Definitely intriguing!

Dandies In Print: Buck Magazine

I'm officially obsessed. New British magazine Buck is a young dandy's dream come true, featuring fashion, restaurants, photography, design, all of the necessities. Issue three just came out, although we're apparently an issue behind in the U.S. so I've only seen the first two issues. It's unlike any men's lifestyle magazine I've seen before. A favorite regular feature is the Uncle Buck column in which "our favourite Uncle gives his tips on more traditional ways to live in the modern world: handiwork suggestions, old remedies and forgotten pointers." Can't wait to see issue three!

Dandies On Stage: Spring Awakening

Last night I had the pleasure of seeing the final Broadway performance of Spring Awakening. Although I'd seen the show before, it struck me that the young men in the show are a bit dandy. Dapper in a 19th century German school boy uniform sort of way.

Dandies On TV: The Young Gents Of Gossip Girl

This post is long in coming. I had to do it. The young prep-school guys of the CW's Gossip Girl are very new-school-dandy. Particularly the character Chuck Bass, played by Ed Westwick. From the private school uniform neck tie, to the pocket squares, bow ties, and cravats, these guys have to take partial responsibility for the dandy revival amongst the hip, under-20's crowd.

Late Night Dandy Attire: Pajamas

Men's lifestyle blog, Valet answers a reader's query in today's post regarding pajamas: "If you want the classic trappings grandpa wore to bed, then your best bet is to go where gramps would go shopping" says the style experts at Valet. "Brooks Brothers has an array of civilized sleepwear for the pipe-smoking set—from soft chambray and oxford cotton to natty tattersall or broadcloth." In fact, pajama-inspired looks were popular on the runway for spring as you can see from the models in the image on the left. Clockwise from top: Brooks Brothers, Bottega Venetta, and Dolce & Gabbana. Is that a pocket square on the Dolce & Gabbana model?

CNN: Dapper Men Emerge In 2009

Jane Buckingham of The Intelligence Group, a market research firm specializing in trend forecasting, appeared on CNN today and made some predictions for 2009. Most interesting was her take on men's style. According to Buckingham, generally men will dress up more this year(particularly at work), the dandy is back, and bow ties will be very popular. I guess that means you can call us trendsetters!

Dandies In Print: The Official Preppy Handbook

I just received in the mail via Amazon a copy of The Official Preppy Handbook. Subtitled "Look, Muffy, a book for us" this hilarious 1980 guide edited by Lisa Birnbach is a must-browse. It's full of tongue-in-cheek essays such as "Regulating The Cash Flow: Well-to-Do's and Don'ts", "Before Truth, The Right Fork: A Preppy Value System" and "Prep On All Fours: The Proper Pet". And of course a good portion of the book is dedicated to preppy style. My favorite essay is "The Politics Of Monogramming: When Your Own Initials Will Do" which includes a list of what to monogram (handkerchiefs, place mats, soap) and what not (suits, your china, your car). Very funny stuff, Muffy.

Dandies Online: Inauguration Day Top Hats

The Huffington Post has assembled a fantastic slideshow of inauguration day images of a handful of former presidents wearing one of the dandiest of all accessories: the top hat. The blog suggests that it is "high time this elegant tradition came back. Do you agree?" We give our full endorsement!
