New School Dandy Profile: Shadi Jurdi
Over the past several months we have been introduced to many amazing people through our Facebook fan page. With this post we continue a regular series of profiles of New School Dandies. This week we feature Shadi Jurdi of the blog Haute Campus.
Where did you grow up? Well I was born in Pasadena, and throughout the years slowly moved further and further from Los Angeles. So no one place in particular, but on the outskirts of LA.
Where do you live now? In the San Bernardino County. About 40 minutes from LA.
Where do you go to school? I am currently at Mt. San Antonio College, it’s the biggest community college here in California, but I plan to transfer to UCLA in a year.
What are you studying? I am a student studying communications, I also write for my school magazine Substance, and I intern for Katy Rodriguez on Melrose.
When did you establish your personal style? Was there a pivotal moment? How has it changed? I guess my personal style started developing when I started high school, but my style is constantly evolving. What I wear now is different from what I wore 2 years ago, and will most likely continue to change.
How would you describe your style? I’m the kid who always dressed up for everything (my mom jokes about how I would get dressed up for summer camp while all the other kids were dirty and miskept). I have this philosophy of always looking your best no matter what you’re doing or where you’re going, because you just never know who or what the day can bring. I like classic and clean shapes, a neutral pallet with a bold splash of color somewhere.
What are your sources of inspiration? I think my biggest source of inspiration would be the sixties. Although there was such a dramatic shift in culture and politics, people were still finding ways to have fun, and you can see that in the way they dressed.
Who is your style icon? I don’t really have one. There are people I admire for the contributions they’ve made like Hedi Slimane and how he changed the way we look at men’s fashion (he comes into the studio where I work every now and then…someday I’ll get introduced). I also like Ezra Koeing of Vampire Weekend; I flipped out over a pair of paisley print shorts he wore when I saw them perform once, he has the coolest style!
What are your preferred dandy reading materials? Well I subscribe to Details, and I also love Paper magazine.
Do you have a favorite website? I love Kwannam Chu’s We Could Grow Up Together, lookbook, Pink is the New Blog, and of course, The Sartorialist.
What is your favorite personal item (non-clothing/accessories)? I don’t really have any emotional attachments to things, I guess if anything I would say my collectors edition of The Tales of Beedle the Bard, since it’s the rarest Harry Potter book in circulation. I am a Huge HP dork, but to me I think it benchmarks my childhood, I started reading in the third grade, and the series ended right after my senior year of high school.
What is your favorite clothing article or accessory? I would say my Marc Jacobs watch I bought myself for Christmas a few years ago. It has a very simple black leather band, but the face is pretty big. I guess it kind of represents my style, classic but fun.
Where is your favorite or dream vacation spot? Favorite spot is San Diego. Dream spot would be Salamanca, Spain. I also spent a week in Lake Powell last summer, which was amazing.
Tell us the best kept secret in your city. Well its the next city over but I love going to the Claremont Village. It’s a quite little college town outside of the Claremont Colleges with amazing restaurants, and my favorite bakery Some Crust (I get my birthday cake there every year).
What would you be doing ten years from now? Hopefully either doing fashion PR, or writing and doing editorial work for a major fashion publication. I am fascinated with the magazine industry and hope to find my way in soon!

Dandies Online: Pelayo Diaz Zapico
Fashion student/model/blogger Pelayo Diaz Zapico of Kate Loves Me just posted about his experience at Cannes as the guest of Dean and Dan of Dsquared2. "Prince Pelayo" (as he has become known) has become an international fashion sensation and his account of his once-in-a-lifetime weekend is a great read. Pelayo represented the new school dandy well and has the photos to prove it. Lot's of bow ties!

Dandy Retail: Richard Haines At J.Crew
This afternoon I stopped by the new J. Crew Men's Shop in Soho. Following the success of J. Crew's Liquor Store, the Soho store is the second Men's Store location. The work of our friend Richard Haines of the blog What I Saw Today is showcased in the window display and Richard was on hand to sketch store visitors. What a great way to christen the new shop!

Dandies In Print: The New York Times
In yesterday's New York Times, David Colman writes about recession-era men's fashion in "When No One Wants to Look Like a Banker". The menswear industry has not been hit as badly as womenswear and men are reinventing their style. They are staying away from the conservative Wall Street look and instead are emulating the "creative professional". Professional guys are trying to disassociate themselves from the old boys club that got us into this mess. Essentially, the look is professional enough, but with a bit of quirkiness.

Where did you grow up? Hong Kong.
Where do you live now? Hong Kong and New York City!
What’s your occupation? Creative Director. Photographer. I also write for magazines in China.
When did you establish your personal style? Was there a pivotal moment? How has it changed? I do not think there was a moment. My style keeps evolving; it depends on what inspires me or turns me on recently.
How would you describe your style? If you put a prepster, an East Village hipster, a little Sebastian Flyte, an asian Pee Wee Herman into a blender, the smoothie would be called Kwannam Chu.
What are your sources of inspiration? Stylish charismatic real folks on the street, antique photos, magazine spreads (old or new), fictional or fairy tales characters, Norman Rockwell's works ...
Who is your style icon? Sebastian Flyte from Brideshead Revisited, Ashely Olsen, Gene Kelly, Stephen Tennant, Antony Baekeland in the movie Savage Grace.
What are your preferred dandy reading materials? Dressing Right: A Guide for men by Charles Hix. Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh. The New Yorker. Serious Pleasures: The Life of Stephen Tennant by Philip Hoare. The magazine Man About Town.
What is your favorite personal item (non-clothing/accessories)? My journal and my filofax agenda.
What is your favorite clothing article or accessory? My DITA spectacles.
Where is your favorite or dream vacation spot? New York in the 50's.
At which establishments would you consider yourself a regular? I need my coffee from Abraco and Nine Street Espresso. Food shopping at the Wholefoods on Bowery. Always keep going back for the squid pasta at Max. The cakes from Babycakes are always my guilty pleasure. Mama's Food Shop is my favorite dinner!
What would you be doing ten years from now? Doing the same thing, expect I would be a hell lot better and skillful and amazing at that.

Presidential Dandy - Black Tie Optional?
There has been a lot of discussion about President Obama's attire at the Correspondents' Dinner Saturday night. Traditionally a black tie event, President Obama wore a long necktie rather than a bow tie. This was a popular trend several years ago at Hollywood openings and award shows; a trend that seems to have waned. I'm a big advocate of strictly wearing bow ties at formal events. Do you agree?

Dandies Online: What Chuck Wore
Whether you love the show or hate it. Whether you love his style or hate it. There is no denying that the character of Chuck Bass on the CW's Gossip Girl is a modern day dandy. I think it's just one more testament of the return of the dandy. The blog What Chuck Wore chronicles the character's style.

New School Dandy Profile: Joshua Kissi
Over the past several months we have been introduced to many amazing people through our Facebook fan page. With this post we continue a regular series of profiles of New School Dandies. This week we feature Joshua Kissi of Street Etiquette.
Where is your favorite or dream vacation spot? My dream vacation spot would have to be in Honolulu, Hawaii a beautiful place from what I can tell. I dreamt once of having dinner on side of the water while a volcano erupted with a nice lady friend. From that day on I vowed that I must visit Hawaii and maybe fulfill that dream with everything except for the lava.(lol)
Tell us the best kept secret in your city. Aside from Manhattan, Brooklyn and all the other highly publicized places in New York City, the best kept secret is the Bronx. Yes, I said it, the Bronx, the borough that never recovered from the 1970s/1980s mis-happenings. It will be the next place to be, mark my words.

Where did you grow up? I was born and raised in New York City, particularly the Bronx and it's still where I reside today. Don't have any plans on moving out this borough anytime soon to hot spots like Brooklyn or Manhattan.
Where did you go to school? Still enrolled at community college until Fall of 2009; then I could transfer to a different school of my choice.
What's your occupation? Presently I work at the UK fashion retailer Topshop/Topman as a Sales Advisor. The hype and reputation of the store has been nothing short of chaos, as loads of people hit the store floor daily. As an employee I can't complain about the store; it consists of a real family type environment. This is only a stepping stone in my chapter and I'm trying to enjoy it while I'm still at this position.
When did you establish your personal style? Wow, this response will be quite a long one. I would say I started to first solidify my style around the 10th grade of high school. I started off as a sneaker head and continued to find my niche as I was growing up. The transition for me took some research in my likings and dis-likings, and to just simply broaden my knowledge about fashion in general. For years I was so accustomed to loose t-shirts, baggy jeans with sneakers, but soon that would change. Doing this would result in a little bit of backlash from my peers and people in general. The Bronx's location is distant from the style and influences of Manhattans as and as a result, if an individual changed their style to something more "fitted" or "tight" they would probably be labeled homosexual. Personally people wanted to see you a certain way, listen to a certain type of music, and so forth. Anything going out of the box of norms would be deemed strange. By the time I found online fashion forums my style started to turn into it's own, not trying to only replicate what I liked, but place my own spin on it to make it personal to me. My style literally went through phases of evolution on the Internet. I went into more detail with this with a post on my own blog.
How would you describe your style? People always ask me that. It's more funny that I'm totally speechless to these answers no matter how many times asked. My mind goes into a whirlwind of possible answers and I usually I just say "Street Etiquette", it may sound cliche or senseless but the term hits it right on the head. My style isn't too driven by Etiquette if you had to assume someone with suits and really dressy type outfits. My style isn't too driven by Street, it has accents of street like it contains some sort of etiquette. The term Street Etiquette perfectly describes me and Trav's style (the other half of Street Etiquette), that's what it is.
What are your sources of inspiration? I have several sources of inspirations that constantly inspire me. Music, that is like the universal language to every population in the world. It takes you on a journey through rhythm and sounds processing it what ever way you want it to be. I play several instruments so music plays a vital part in my life, I could never give it up. My main inspiration is the ordinary people on the street who are considered "fashionable", but rather see their dressing as just a lifestyle and nothing more.

Who is your style icon? Wow, style icon that is a tough one to be honest. I would have to side with Miles Davis, but ultimately I admire the Harlem Renaissance era of style.
What are your preferred dandy reading materials? Outside of magazines such as GQ, Vman and Monocle I try to get my hands on anything that grabs my interest. There are a lot of cool international magazines I would like to get my hands on, but I'm pretty satisfied with the scans on the Internet.
Do you have a favorite website? My favorite website outside of Street Etiquette would be hard to choose. I do frequently read Hyr collective , Jake Davis , The Award Tour and The Sartoralist of course. A website has to keep me coming back day in and day out for me to consider it among one of my favorites. There is an over saturation of reading material on the Internet revolved around fashion, I try to read the interesting ones.
What is your favorite personal item (non clothing/accessories)? My favorite personal item would have to be my family portrait I took of my whole family during Thanksgiving portraying the generation gap between the family.
What is your favorite clothing article or accessory? It is difficult for me to pick one specific article of clothing and label it my favorite out of all. It would be my J.Crew Newport Rain Slicker jacket I got off of ebay for a good price compared to retail. The function of the jacket works perfectly while the cut of the jacket looks amazing for the rain. In general rain jackets come off as everything , but "fashionable" I have to say I simply love this jacket.
Where is your favorite or dream vacation spot? My dream vacation spot would have to be in Honolulu, Hawaii a beautiful place from what I can tell. I dreamt once of having dinner on side of the water while a volcano erupted with a nice lady friend. At which establishments would you consider yourself a regular? I would consider myself a regular at D&D's Deli on Spring St, the first place I go to when my stomach rumbles on my lunch break. Working down in the city makes you easily prone to eat a lot of should I say "unhealthy" food, but I try to eat healthy at the deli.
What would you be doing ten years from now? Ten years from now, that would make me 30 years old, I would like to be living comfortably in New York City, preferably the Bronx. The name of Street Etiquette will be globally known and will have had accomplished an abundance of things. A clothing boutique named Street Etiquette accompanied by a great following is also a vision we have. The Bronx will contain a place where things like the arts and being prosperous will be common. In fact we created one of the most expressive forms of musical arts "Hip-Hop".

Dandies In Print: A Man's Book
My friend Fernando gave me his copy of Jane Waller's out-of-print book, A Man's Book - Fashion In The Man's World In The 20's and 30's. What an amazing collection of photos and illustrations. Lot's of inspiration. A true dandy resource. Thanks Fernando!
