Dandy Endorsed: Movember
Last year around this time we blogged about Movember, a month-long moustache
growing event raising "vital funds and awareness for men’s health,
specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men". We
recently learned that our friend and customer, Skinner, is participating
so we asked him to be our Movember
"corespondent". Each week through November Skinner will check in with us to update us on his progress.
Skinner writes:
“WELCOME THE RESISTANCE!”
Starting Monday, I knew it
wasn’t going to be my best week when the sign in the barber shop read
“reopening soon”. Instead I went to the
doctor for my annual physical. Clean
bill of health! At least that’s
something.
“No way, I would look
ridiculous.”
“My wife would hate it.”
“My Boss would get so pissed.”
“My Mother-in-Law would disown
me.”
“My patients would be scared of me.”
“I’d ruin Thanksgiving dinner.”
Why is everyone resisting? Have
we become such a style over substance culture that we can’t “donate” our upper
lips for 30 days without worrying about any negative consequences? I know I’m not going to have a “Tom Selleck” or “Salvador
Dali”. I’ll be lucky to look like Errol
Flynn. Let’s be honest for a second, the
truth is IT’S NOT ABOUT THE MO. Look at
the bigger picture. If you won’t give up
your face for a month how are you ever going to make any serious changes that
could potentially save your life. So ask
yourself “what’s stopping me from growing a Mo’?” and get over it! PLEASE.
Good news, my barber
shop opened up and I have an appointment set for Tuesday. I’ll be starting off Movember with my
smoothest shave ever.

Dandy Video: Harry Shum Jr For GQ
You may have seen Glee's Harry Shum Jr. in November's GQ in a pictorial on dressing for winter. I just came across this "behind the scenes" video of the photo shoot. Looking spiffy Mr. Shum. (And nice moves.)

Fair Isle Socks
We're
huge fans of fair isle and as the temperature grows colder it's clear
we're not alone. So it's no surprise that some of our favorite socks of
the season are fair isle, including our first cashmere socks:
And plenty of other fall favorites for your feet on the shop site here.

Dandy Video: Boardwalk Empire Costumes
It's no secret that we're huge fans of HBO's Boardwalk Empire. Check out this video from We Are The Market in which they visit the costume designers from the series. Dream job, no?

We all
know looking good is fun but let’s get serious for a minute. My life was
changed forever last year with a random click while surfing the web: “Welcome
to Movember. Changing the face of men’s health”. The initial “oh this looks
funny”, turned more serious the deeper I searched the site. “Were all these
stats true?”
1 in 2 men will
be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.
13 million adult men over the age of 20
in the US have diabetes - and a third don’t know it.
1 in 8 men who suffer from mental illness
actually seek help.
A third of the 571,950 cancer deaths
expected to occur will be related to obesity, physical inactivity, poor
nutrition and thus could be prevented.
I hadn’t been to a doctor in years, but it was okay. I was
young, I worked out, and I ate right. So did my friend Mark who died 10 years
ago from pancreatic cancer. I realized, although bow ties are great, hats are
fun, and accessories are charming, I spent more time worrying about what to wear
than my health. Last year alone I lost 4 dear friends to cancer and I’m sure
all of us have similar stories.
Simply put, we all know cancer is bad, but Movember takes it to the next level: “CHANGE HOW MEN THINK ABOUT THEIR HEALTH (and look good doing it)”. That’s what hit me so hard. So last year I started to grow a mustache. I went to the doctor (thankfully, all was well). During that month I heard sad stories, heard happy stories, and met the most inspiring, amazing, and classy people. Those relationships haven’t ended just because I shaved on December 1st. We’re all in this together and together we’re making a difference. Last year alone $80 million was raised for prostate cancer research and other programs.

So, please check it out and sign up. Join my team. Start a team with friends, family or co-workers. Donate to someone you know (or me). At the very least, if you haven’t been to the doctor lately, set up an appointment. Looking good on the outside is great but being healthy can be a lifesaver.
Next week ...my first trip to a real barbershop!

Dandy Profile: Patrick McDonald
Since the shop site launched three years ago we have been introduced to hundreds of stylish guys who embrace their "inner-dandy". With this post we continue our semi-regular series of dandy profiles, now featuring legendary dandy Patrick McDonald, with photos by Rose Callahan.
Where did you grow up? I grew up in San Luis Obispo, California.
I moved there when I was very young. I was born in Heidelberg, Germany.
I came over from Hamburg, Germany along with Salvador Dali and Rossano
Brazzi.
Where do you live now? I live in Alphabet City, New York City.
Where did you go to school? I went to Pepperdine University in Malibu, California.
What’s your occupation? I'm a dandy of all trades.
When did you establish your personal style? Was there a pivotal moment? The pivotal moment was when I was a little boy, about five years old, and I got my first box of Cracker Jacks. I reached in for the prize and it was a little metal bird and I pinned it to my navy blue jacket uniform which I wore to school and that was the beginning of everything.
How would you describe your style? I describe my style as my art. It's what I create every morning when I wake up.
What are your sources of inspiration? My major source of inspiration are the streets of New York City and the streets of the world. But also, the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Who is your style icon? Salvador Dali.
What are your preferred dandy reading materials? I like to read autobiographies. Actually I'm reading a book right now called Furious Love and it's about the love letters between Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.
What is your favorite clothing article or accessory? My hats.
Where is your favorite or dream vacation spot? I have more than one. But I will choose two: Fire Island Pines and Paris, France.
Tell us the best kept secret in your city. Life Cafe.
At which establishments would you consider yourself a regular? Again, Life Cafe. Also Indochine.
What would you be doing ten years from now? I hope to be enjoying my life as I always have enjoyed my life. I hope I still have the freedoms that I have. And I hope to be healthy and to be around people that I love.
What is your current obsession? I am currently obsessed with good manners and the people who have them.
Currently inspired by? I am inspired by people who aren't afraid to express themselves in how they look at all costs. I'm inspired by a lovely girl by the name of Michelle Harper, Robert Richards, Kenny Kenny. I'm inspired by creatives.
Currently annoyed with? I'm annoyed with greed. I'm annoyed that people need so much when there is so much to be shared. I'm annoyed with entitlement and people being mean-spirited and ill-mannered.
What else do you want to tell us? I will leave you with a quote: Fashion is my art and that art is my freedom.

Formal Friday
Fridays have officially gone formal at FineAndDandyShop.com. In our opinion the world has gone too casual from a style perspective. This is our anti-casual Friday. So each week we ask you to get dressed up, encourage your co-workers to do the same, and send us a photo: info@FineAndDandyShop.com.
