Illustrated Dandy: Men's Fashion, The Complete Sourcebook

Another image from John Peacock's Men's Fashion: The Complete Sourcebook, our favorite dandy encyclopedia.

This image is from the Day Wear 1915-18 section. We thought this look would be the perfect look for transitioning into fall.

New School Dandy Profile: Pelayo Díaz Zapico

Over the past several months we have been introduced to many amazing people through our Facebook fan page. With this post we continue a regular series of profiles of New School Dandies. This week we feature fashion design student and blogger Pelayo Diaz Zapico Of Kate Loves Me.

Where did you grow up? I grew up in Oviedo, north Spain. Classic and boring, just like a bow tie, that's why you always have to make things your way so life is a little more fun.

Where do you live now? I live in London. Beautiful and different.

Where did you go to school? I went to art school in Spain, then I got into Saint Martins, where I'm still studying fashion design.

What’s your occupation? I'm in my gap year where we are supposed to get work experience and learn from other designers. I might start after the summer. Meanwhile I'm busy helping in photo shoots and doing the visuals for a brand here in London.

When did you establish your personal style? Was there a pivotal moment? How has it changed? My style is a mixture between people I've met through the years, movies I've watched, places I've been, and new ideas in my head. If you believe in all that, a character is born. I love being that character.

How would you describe your style? I am a bit L.A kid meets 50's pimp. I don't know, you tell me, what do you think is my style?

Who is your style icon? There isn't really a guy that I look up to dress like. There are women that I think of in order to dress accordingly if I were meeting them. Sometimes, when I go a bit crazy I think what would I wear if it was fashion week and I was going to a show. Or, what would I wear if I were going shopping with Mary Kate Olsen or if I was out for dinner with Diane Krueger. It depends.

What are your preferred dandy reading materials? Hercules magazine, V Man and 10men.

Do you have a favorite website? easyjet.com. Every time I have a reason to go in there I am happy.

What is your favorite personal item (non-clothing/accessories)? A camera, digital or disposable.

What is your favorite clothing article or accessory? A navy blue, short sleeve shirt with pockets that I bought at H&M. Very classy!

Where is your favorite or dream vacation spot? I can't wait to go to Bora Bora.

At which establishments would you consider yourself a regular? I love Shoreditch House in East London, a club with a pool on the roof. Breakfast on Mondays are my favourite.

What would you be doing ten years from now? Directing a fashion house.

What is your current obsession? Crosses and dices. I keep drawing them.

Currently inspired by? D.I.Y attitude.

Currently annoyed with? The weather. This is supposed to be summer for f**** sake!

What else do you want to tell us? I went to the opera a few months ago and some friends where shocked because I didn't wear a bow-tie or shiny shoes. Instead I turned in rolled up jeans and Doc Martins and a black shirt. Dandy people can do things like that, can't they? I mean, if you really are dandy you don't need an occasion to dress up and that day I felt like going to the opera with Joe Dallesandro.

New School Dandy Profile: Ari Cohen

Over the past several months we have been introduced to many amazing people through our Facebook fan page. With this post we continue a regular series of profiles of New School Dandies. This week we feature blogger Ari Cohen of Advanced Style.

Where did you grow up? I grew in San Diego, raiding my grandfather's closet. I was much more of a dandy as a little boy.

Where do you live now? Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Where did you go to school? University of Washington, studied Art History.

What’s your occupation? I work at the New Museum bookstore, do event planning and take pictures of stylish old people for my blog, Advanced Style.

When did you establish your personal style? Was there a pivotal moment? How has it changed? I always loved hats, vests, and color as a kid. I would go antiquing with my mom and find treasures. I have adapted my style to be a mix of vintage and contemporary items, flashy and classic.

How would you describe your style? It is a mix of eccentric items, like a vest with sequined music notes, to a chambray shirt with vintage YSL pants.

What are your sources of inspiration? Walking around New York and seeing the way older people put together items they have had for years with more currents trends.

Who is your style icon? I am inspired by Quentin Crisp and Mimi Weddell.

What is your favorite personal item (non-clothing/accessories)? My collection of antique postcards 1890-1960s.

What is your favorite clothing article or accessory? A shirt that I have with the Eiffel Tower printed all over it with splashes of red, yellow and blue and my vintage wallet with Egyptian iconography.

Where is your favorite or dream vacation spot? A beach with a magical castle!

Tell us the best kept secret in your city. Old people are friendly and want to share their great stories and wisdom, most people don't know this!

What is your current obsession? Vintage wallets.

New School Dandy Profile: Brian Ness

Over the past several months we have been introduced to many amazing people through our Facebook fan page. With this post we continue a regular series of profiles of New School Dandies. This week we feature illustrator Brian Ness of Greetings From Dandyland.

Where do you live? Minneapolis, MN.

What’s your occupation? I work in Merchandising for Target, and as a freelance illustrator. I also write and draw a quarterly zine about young, gay dandies, called Kitten Punch.

How would you describe your style? I guess I’m the type of dandy you’d expect beach-side with an old, warn, leather-bound book... a little tweedy, maybe a little relaxed, but at the same time buttoned-up and covered in a sweater.

Who is your style icon? Yesterday, today, always, Gene Kelly.

Do you have a favorite website? Aside from Fine And Dandy? Planet Fabulon. They never cease to inspire, amuse, and mortify!

What is your favorite personal item (non-clothing/accessories)? When my grandmother died, I took her pair of never-warn, red bowling shoes. They are in the original box, and it’s shared with a few other artifacts of her’s and my father’s.
What is your favorite clothing article or accessory? My gold sneakers. They make me feel like Ziggy Stardust.

Tell us the best kept secret in your city / At which establishments would you consider yourself a regular? Blackbird Cafe. It’s this teeny little gem of a restaurant with simple, delicious food, and a great staff. Just about every day I crave it. Or Magers and Quinn, a fantastic book store that I can never leave without arms full of books.

What would you be doing ten years from now? More time drawing and designing, and less time on jobs that pay the rent. I’d assume that, in some fashion, I’d still be working on my zine, Kitten Punch, and I’d also really like to turn my stories about well-dressed sissies into animated shorts.

What is your current obsession? Back Bay Books has published Evelyn Waugh novels in paperback, with covers illustrated by Bill Brown. They are absolutely fantastic!

Currently inspired by? Maxfield Parrish illustrations, Hitchcock Films, tartan.
