Dandies On Screen: Brideshead Revisited

Tonight I finally caught the film Brideshead Revisited. Totally new to me as I hadn’t seen the PBS mini-series, nor read the novel. I was in dandy bliss. From the too “casual” for dinner three-piece flannel suits to the black tie attire at formal events, the style was impeccable. What a different time to have lived. Was I born 70 years too late?

Fine And Dandy In Fashion Rocks

To my delight, last night I read the headline "FINE AND DANDY" in Fashion Rocks, the supplement to a number of magazines from Conde Nast. No, our little shop wasn't being given the most extraordinary feature, even before our launch. Rather, the article was about Andre Benjamin (a.k.a. Andre 3000) of hip-hop duo OutKast. Benjamin is the quintessential 21st century dandy and the article promotes his recently launched dandy-inspired menswear label, Benjamin Bixby. Just more evidence of the return of the dandy.

I was just given a copy of the book "Fred Astaire Style" and it's a reminder how much I've appreciated Fred Astaire's look. Always immaculately dressed. A true dandy if I've ever seen one.

Vintage Dandy: 1949 Princeton University Yearbook

I was at a flea market this weekend and picked up a copy of a 1949 Princeton yearbook. The men's style was amazing. Guys didn't dress like that when I was in school. Was it a sign of the times or the fact that Princeton is an Ivy League school? Probably a bit of both.

I was immediately struck by a photo of the 21 club, a mysterious, exclusive social club. Each guy was impeccably dressed in such an iconic collegiate style. As I was looking at the photo I chose the third guy from the right in the front row as the most fine and dandy. I was shocked to see his name, C. W. Henry. Is he a long lost great-uncle?
