Dandy Accessory: The Neckerchief

Tommy Ton's photos from Paris Fashion Week for GQ show several guys wearing neckerchiefs. We enjoyed them last year and made a few for the shop towards the end of the summer. We think of them as the dandy's version of going casual. We went all out for our spring collection with seven different styles of neckerchiefs. Here are some of the guys in Paris:

Vintage Dandy

I'm having a bit of an obsession with lapel pins of late. This one looks like an "E" within a "C" or a horseshoe.

Dandies In Print: Golf, A Visual History

I just picked up this book at a flea market and it is further proof of the way folks dressed a century ago. I mean, imagine dressing like this while playing sports?

"The First Amateur Golf Championship Held In America, 1894" lithograph by E. Currier in 1931 Fortune Magazine.

Golf at Prestwick, 1890.

"The Drive" by Charles Edmund Brock, 1894.

"The Old Apple Tree Gang" by Leland R. Gustavson.

"The Great Triumvirate" by Clement Flower, 1913.

Harry Vardon.

Men's fashion plate, 1905.

Charles Blair Macdonald by Gari Melchers, after 1910.

British Open Champions, 1928 or 1929.

J. H. Taylor, 1920.

Golfers Magazine, 1915.

Walter Hagen, 1922.

Fashion Advertisement, 1929.

Bobby Jones, 1936.

Men's Fashion Plate, 1920's.

"Your Tee Is Ready, Sir" by H.M. Bateman, 1933.

Henry Cotton, 1934.

"The Winning Putt", 1930.

Formal Friday

Fridays have officially gone formal at In our opinion the world has gone too casual from a style perspective. This is our anti-casual Friday. So each week we encourage you to get dressed up, encourage your co-workers to do the same, and send us a photo.

Dandy Accessory: Bright Colored Laces

I was just flipping through some photos and came across this one of us which Tommy Ton shot for GQ during New York Fashion Week while we were sitting around waiting to go into a show. I've really been into replacing shoelaces lately, particularly with something bright and unexpected. Which prompted us to stock them on the shop site in purple, red, neon orange, and neon green. It's amazing how some fresh laces can breathe new life into a pair of shoes kicking around for awhile.

Dandy Designer: Philip Sparks

I've followed Toronto clothing designer Philip Sparks for several years now and when he was in town last month he invited me to view his Fall 2011 collection. It certainly didn't disappoint and was consistent with Philip's "look". Last week while in Toronto I stopped by his studio on Queen West which serves as a manufacturing space during the week and on Saturdays is open to the public as a retail shop. I found it most interesting that Philip manufactures most of his collection in house. As clothing manufacturing companies have closed around Canada he's purchased quite a bit of the equipment, the older the better. His most recent purchase (one that he was most excited to show off) was his fur machine. It's great to see a relatively young company place such importance on manufacturing locally.
